book discussion

About Vermont Reads:

Do you like to read? Would you like a chance to talk about a book you’ve read with others in the community? If so, consider joining us for "Vermont Reads." The Vermont Humanities Council provides the library with multiple copies of discussion books, which can be picked up at the circulation desk.

Hilary Farrington, library building consultant, is visiting public libraries in smaller New England towns. She recently toured the Brown Public Library and has posted photos and complimentary observations on our library in her blog Library Space Traveler.

Examples of Past Events:

The Brown Public Library conducts a summer reading program for children with a different theme each year. This summer's theme was "One World, Many Stories." Participants in the reading program learned about four different cultures. One of the countries that children learned about was Guatemala. Click this link Kids Share Workshops visits the Brown Public Library for a description of the "Kids Share" program in Guatemala and to view a slideshow of Northfield children engaged in the workshop in the Community Room. The slideshow requires JavaScript to be enabled on your browser. The reading program series concluded with a performance by the Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater. In the photo below, children dance with members of the Jeh Kulu troop.

Last summer the children enjoyed learning activities relating to various aspects of water and were encouraged to set a reading goal and to keep a log of books they read during the month. The program concluded with a picnic for participants and their families. In the photos below, Avery Motyka concentrates during the water balloon toss, and children from the Northfield Boys and Girls Club Camp show off the rain sticks they made.
